A Previously Repaired Tooth with a New Cavity Might Need a Crown

Posted .

Here at Trecker and Lopez Family Dentistry, Dr. Marcus Lopez often uses fillings to repair a small-to-modest-sized cavity. If a new cavity forms on the tooth at a later date, it could cause treatment complications. In many of these cases, there might not be enough healthy tooth enamel remaining to safely secure a second filling.

To effectively treat a tooth in this condition, your dentist might recommend a dental crown restoration. This is a course of treatment designed to fully replace the entire tooth enamel layer with a replica made from porcelain, gold, or a metallic alloy.

This typically requires two separate appointments. During your first appointment, your dentist will numb the area and use a drill to remove all the tooth enamel. This leaves behind an abutment containing the dentin, pulp, and root of the tooth.

Your dentist will create a detailed impression of the area to serve as a guide for our off-site dental lab where your new crown will be made. A hard, plastic, temporary crown will be secured over the abutment to protect it.

When your new crown is ready, a member of our staff will call you to schedule a brief follow-up appointment. Once the potent dental cement has bonded the crown to the abutment, you can enjoy a fully restored tooth for many years to come.
