Composite Fillings to Protect and Enhance Your Smile

Posted .

If you have a cavity in your tooth, your dentist will use a filling in the space left after he removes the decayed tooth material. Depending on the location and size of the cavity, it may be possible to use a filling that will blend in with the rest of your tooth.

Normally, these filling which are made of a composite of powdered glass and plastic, are best used for small caviies that will be located in areas of your smile that are readily visible to other people. They work best for teeth that will not receive a great deal of pressure from biting or chewing.

Your dentist will use a composite that is colored to match the rest of the tooth in order to make sure that is properly blends in with your smile. The process of placing a composite, tooth-colored filling can take longer than other fillings, since the tooth often needs to be kept dry during the process, and composite fillings are applied in layers to give them added strength. These layers need to be hardened by a special light as they are applied. When the filling has been placed, the dentist will shape and polish the tooth.

You will need to continue to brush and floss on every day to make sure that your teeth remain healthy. A good dental regimen needs to be supported by regular visits to your dentist for routine cleanings and exams. Composites can be discolored by tobacco, and dark-colored foods and drinks. Your composite filling will last five years or more with proper care.
